Fundraiser Launched For Tireless Cystic Fibrosis Campaigner Orla Tinsley

Sarah

A fundraising campaign has been launched to help tireless CF campaigner Orla Tinsley as she awaits a double lung transplant in a New York hospital.

Orla’s journalism and activism drew much-needed national attention to the sub-standard level of care for adult patients in Ireland, and led to the creation of a dedicated CF unit at St Vincent’s Hospital in Dublin, and since moving to the US to study she has continued to be an advocate for CF sufferers.

Having gone into respiratory failure last year, just before turning 30, Orla is on the active transplant waiting list and although the cost of her surgery will be covered by medical insurance, her doctors have warned that the cost of recovery, including transport, oxygen and much more, will be high.

A Go Fund Me page set up by writer and friend of Orla, Belinda McKeon, aims to raise $50,000, with a total of over $17,000 raised at time of writing.

The page says that:

“Orla’s transplant team have advised that she should have a large contingency fund in place which can be put towards these costs.

“The sums are enormous, so I’m setting up this fundraising campaign to make a contribution; please give what you can and spread the word.

“She’s facing a very tough time ahead, and we can help to make it a little easier and less stressful.”
