Gardai have revealed details of Operation Fanacht, which will see officers deployed around the country ensuring travel restrictions are being adhered to.

Operation Fanacht runs from noon today until the night of Easter Monday. It involves over 2,500 gardai conducting checkpoints and high visibility patrolling across the Easter weekend to ensure people are adhering to social distancing measures aimed at preventing the spread of Covid-19.

These checkpoints will be set up on main roads and motorways around Ireland and officers will be ensuring that all journeys made outside of 2km are essential. Those who are found in breach of the measures could face a fine of €2,500 or a jail sentence.

Commissioner Drew Harris said that if people are currently staying in their holiday homes that is now considered their place of residence. He added “delivering Easter eggs is not an essential journey,” and those who are found doing so will be asked to return home.”

Harris also said that “the regulations are backing up all of the advice that has been provided” and encouraged anyone with concerns about situations that may lead to the spread of Covid-19 to contact gardaí.
