The summer of 2018 was a very busy one for everyone at RTÉ, especially those involved in the sport department.
Between the World Cup, GAA, Athletics and Rowing just to name a few, there was hours of sports coverage each day on the National Broadcaster.
The World Cup still managed to grip a nation even though our beloved Ireland weren’t in it.
However, RTÉ did raise a few eyebrows when they announced that Hope Solo would be one of the pundits on the schedule.
Solo is one of the world’s most successful footballers and even got her hands on the World Cup trophy in 2015 when USA went all the way.
In the same year, Solo also made the FIFA Women’s World Cup All-Star Team and received the Golden Glove Award.
However, question marks surrounded Solo as it was revealed that she was also allegedly accused of domestic abuse in the USA.
You can find more information about her domestic abuse case here.
And, The Irish Sun revealed that although they asked RTÉ to disclose the wage that Solo picked up during her brief stint under the Freedom of Information Act, the National Broadcaster refused on grounds that it is “both personal and commercially sensitive”.
Solo only featured a handful of times during the World Cup but failed to cover even one of the group games.
