Ireland Could Soon Crack Down On People Who Don’t Pay Their TV License Fee

Sarah

It could be bad news for a lotĀ of Irish people who currently hide under the bed and turn off all the lights when the TV license inspector comes around, because RTƉ director-general Dee Forbes has said that she plans to reform the licence fee collection system.

Currently, Ireland has one of the highest evasion rates in Europe, with an estimatedĀ ā‚¬30 million to ā‚¬40 millionĀ lost each year due to people dodging their TV license fee.

Ms Forbes also originally noted that the licence fee cost 40 cent a day, and said thatĀ ā€œI think itā€™s incredible value for money,ā€ she said.Ā

ā€œQuite honestly I think it should be double that.ā€

Don’t freak out though, because she later went on to change her mind on that, so no fear of having to shell out even more for your telly.

Just be warned; itĀ doesĀ look likely that there will be some changes coming in regards to how the fee is collected, so your once-removed, second cousin *cough cough*, who lives down the road will have to pay for his beloved viewing.

The changes comes as the national broadcaster is apparently forced to make a series of cuts, including up to 250 redundancies.
