Snow falls in some parts as Ireland braces for more freezing conditions

Layer up, folks.

Ireland is bracing for more freezing temperatures over the next few days after parts of the country saw light snowfall overnight on Monday, January 8.

There were multiple reports of snowfall in the south and west of Ireland as temperatures plummeted overnight to as low as -5 in some areas.

Temperatures again are expected to drop into minus figures tonight, with Met Éireann warning that it could reach -3 or lower locally in some areas as the cold snap continues.

Ireland braced for more freezing conditions as parts of country see snow

The national forecaster have issued a weather advisory for the ongoing cold snap, saying: “Staying cold with widespread frost and icy patches, leading to hazardous travelling conditions.”

The national outlook for the next few days looks like the wintry conditions are set to continue, with some chance of snow in places over the next week.

Irish weather expert Alan O’Reilly said that the cold from the north and warmer air from the south meeting could cause snow, but it’s “very hard to call where that will be yet.”

Wednesday Night (January 20) will see lows of 0 to -2 degrees for western counties with some frost and ice but staying a little milder in the east with lows of 1 to 3 degrees in a light easterly breeze.

Thursday and Friday night will see similar temperatures, as they continue to drop below freezing throughout the week.

According to the National Forecast, the weekend will be “cloudy with some outbreaks of rain at times. Sunny spells will develop on Sunday however but temperatures on both nights over the weekend are likely to fall below freezing with some patchy frost and ice.”
