Irish rail bats

When Bruce Wayne was always harping on about the bat signal, we didn’t know this was what he meant.

We’ve all got a story to tell when it comes to navigating Ireland via public transport. It’s usually more of a journey to middle earth a la Lord of the Rings rather than a direct route to your chosen destination, with all sorts of surprises along the way.

And if you’ve ever travelled through Gort and had a particularly rogue journey, it could be something to do with the family of bats that were found living in the signalling box there.

Iarnród Éireann took to social media to share snaps of the bats they found nestled among the bolts and wires used to control the railway traffic lights.

A cosy enough spot for them, but nonetheless the rail service got in touch with a local biodiversity expert to find a more suitable home for the winged creatures.

The result was a newly erected bat tower by the tracks, so the bats can still keep an eye and ensure the the 08:40 Limerick – Dublin train departs on time.

Iarnród Éireann have promised to keep a close eye on the new residents and keep wildlife enthusiasts updated on their progress.
