As described by Netflix, "the Fyre Festival was billed as a luxury music experience on a posh private island, but it failed spectacularly in the hands of a cocky entrepreneur."

Basically, the organisers eyes were much bigger than their bellies and underestimated the preparation and money that goes into making a festival.
The stakes got too high towards the end and basically, the organiser began to con investors and festival attendees alike out of money in a 'borrow Peter to pay Paul' mentality.
