Liverpool FC Women announce Irish star as new captain

James Fenton

Liverpool FC Women have announced Galwegian defender Niamh Fahey as their new captain.

Ireland international Niamh Fahey is the new captain of Liverpool FC Women, something which she says she “never thought would happen”. The 32-year-old defender joined Liverpool from French side Bordeaux in 2018 and has previously played for both Arsenal and Chelsea.

A childhood fan of the Reds, Niamh said today that “For me as a supporter, now being captain is beyond my wildest dreams and I’m going to embody the spirit of the club through my captaincy and bring out the values of a Liverpool player.”

Liverpool Women finished bottom of the 2019/20 Women’s Super League, which ended prematurely on May 25 due to the coronavirus pandemic. Therefore, Fahey will be wearing the captain’s armband in the FA Women’s Championship next season. Speaking about the upcoming campaign, Niamh said: “It’s been a really enjoyable pre-season and we’re working really hard to get back up to the Women’s Super League, where we feel we belong. We’re under no illusions that we need to be at the top of our game in every game. We have to be up for the fight but also show our qualities.”

Fahey’s previous position as vice-captain will be taken by Northern Ireland’s Rachel Furness. You can read more about both appointments here.
