There have been over 100,000 cases of Covid-19 recorded in Ireland throughout January 2021, more than those reported in the whole of 2020.

On Saturday evening, 1,414 new cases of Covid-19 were confirmed on, bringing Ireland’s total since the beginning of the pandemic to 195,303. Over 100,000 of these were recorded in January, with Chief Medical Officer Tony Holohan saying last night that “We have experienced over 1,000 deaths and more than 100,000 cases this month. We have reported more cases in one month than we experienced throughout 2020. This shows just how quickly this disease can spread and how much it can impact public health.”

Of the 3,292 coronavirus-related deaths in Ireland, over 1,000 of these occurred in January. 79 of these were reported yesterday evening. Dr. Holohan added: ‘The efforts by all of the population in following the basic public health advice has seen us reduce the incidence of the disease very rapidly – despite this, there remains a level of infection in the population which is double that seen at the peak of incidence last October.’

The peak number of case this month occurred on January 8 when 8,248 cases were reported. 10, 758 people in total have been hospitalised due to the pandemic.

Ireland remains under Level 5 Covid-19 restrictions until March 5.
