The National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET) is meeting this evening to discuss rising Covid-19 numbers.
NPHET doesn’t usually meet on weekends but the gathering was called as Covid-19 cases continue to rise around the country. 613 new cases were reported on Saturday evening, followed by 364 on Sunday.
With much of the country on level 2 of the Living with Covid plan, tonight’s meeting will fuel speculation that about an increase to level 3 or 4. Dublin and Donegal are currently the only two counties at risk level 3.
Any recommendations made tonight will be discussed at the next Cabinet meeting on Tuesday. Earlier this week, it was confirmed that Chief Medical Officer Tony Holohan will be returning to his role after taking time out in July due to family reasons. Earlier today, Health Minister Stephen Donnelly thanked Acting CMO Ronan Glynn for his work in the interim, saying that ‘he stepped into one of the toughest roles in Ireland & did a fantastic job.’
I'd like to express my sincere thanks to @ronan_glynn for all his work as Acting CMO since early July. He stepped into one of the toughest roles in Ireland & did a fantastic job. Looking forward to on-going work with Dr. Glynn and again now with @CMOIreland on his return.
