The purchase will present a positive conservation opportunity for the organisation.

The National Parks and Wildlife Services (NPWS) have officially completed their purchase of the Black Valley land in Kerry.

The NPWS’ mission is to secure the conservation of a representative range of ecosystems, advise on the protection of habitats and species, to manage and maintain National Parks, as well as promote awareness of natural heritage.

According to The Independent, the NPWS has purchased 120 acres of land at Gearhameen, and that the national body has said the land “presents a positive conservation opportunity”.

The Black Valley is a remote valley at the southern end of the MacGillycuddy’s Reeks that is hugely popular with tourists and hikers. It’s situated by Killarney National Park, of which the NPWS acquired more land from in 2022.
