The Irish Examiner is reporting that Irish Boxing champion Ceire Smith is claiming that her career was damaged by the HSE after she swallowed a sharp dental instrument during a root canal treatment.

The 25-year-old, Cavan Boxing Club flyweight was tipped to be the next Katie Taylor and could have qualified for the Rio Olympics in 2016 where she was expected to get a medal.

Court reporter, Ann O’Loughlin, states that Smith has sued her dentist and the HSE after the instrument dropped down her throat.

She was told it would pass through her system but instead it lodged and had to be taken out via surgery.

This instrument caused her to feel very weak and as a result she performed very badly in matches in the run up to Rio.

Smith was then unable to take part in the World Championships in South Korea in November 2014 after surgery which was damaging to her career, it is said.

The case will continue tomorrow.
