WATCH: South American Champions Celebrate Historic Win With Song About An Irish County

The eyes of the football world were fixed on Madrid last night as the two biggest clubs in Argentina went head to head to be crowned the 2018 champions of South America.

If that sounds a bit confusing, the match was played in the Spanish capital after a number of violent events between fans of Buenos Aires rivals River Plate and Boca Juniors saw the second leg of the Copa Libertadores final postponed, leading to authorities taking the match outside the continent of South America for the first time.

In the end, it was River who came out on top, eventually winning 5-3 on aggregate after extra time at the Santiago Bernabéu stadium last night. The celebrations are sure to last for weeks and eagle-eared Irish viewers spotted the triumphant players celebrating with quite a recognisable tune last night.

The well-known melody of It’s A Long Way To Tipperary can be clearly heard towards the end of the below clip, the reason being that the tune has been adapted by River fans into their club anthem Tu Grato Nombre.

Quite an ironic one given that rivals Boca share their blue and gold colours with the Premier County. Also, their first manager Paddy McCarthy hailed from Cashel in the county.

The match was the first time to fierce enemies competed against each other in South America’s showpiece game and judging by the celebrations, Boca won’t be allowed to forget it for a while.
