The 11 Types Of Ireland Fan You’ll Meet At The Aviva Stadium This Friday Night

This Friday sees the biggest football game at the Aviva Stadium in some time as the Republic of Ireland face off against Wales in a crucial World Cup qualifier.

With the Boys In Green sitting pretty at the top of the group, the atmosphere is sure to be electric as we look to take another step on the road to Russia.

If you’re one of the lucky 50,000 or so who have managed to bag a ticket then you might well come across this lot on Friday night.

They’re an eclectic bunch but one thing they have in common is being part of the best supporters’ group in the world.

1. The hardcore

This one follows the Boys In Green everywhere. From Dublin 4 to the far reaches of Eastern Europe to Timbuktu if they had to.

2. The sweary one

“F*ck sake, Coleman!” 

“Duffy, ya stupid b*llocks!”

“Stuck into ‘im McClean, ya f*ckin hero!”

3. The bandwagoner

Someone’s told them it’s an important match. They were there in France and by God you can bet your bottom Ruble they’ll be there in Russia if we qualify.

4. The statistician

This fella can tell tell you exactly what minute Denis Irwin scored his penalty against Croatia in the EURO 2000 qualifiers and who won the throw-in which led to it. 

5. The first-namer

This one seems to be on first name terms with all the players.

“Well in, Wes.”

“A’ boy, Robbie.”

“You’re better than that, Jeffo.”

6. The craic merchant

Sure, they’re only here to stave off the FOMO but they’re good at getting the crowd going. 

7. The awestruck kid

Staring around the Aviva like they’ve just discovered the The Great Valley. 

8. The auld lad

He’s been supporting Ireland since well before it was any craic. 

9. The drunk

One too many pre-drinks, asleep at half-time. 

10. The chancer

They found out about the game about two hours before kick-off. Won a ticket down the boozer.

11. The selfie-taker

“Say cheese!”

“No.”
