Bums left sofas all over Ireland, and around the world, this evening as people leapt to their feet after an astonishing goal for Switzerland at the World Cup.
In the 52nd minute, with the Swiss trailing 1-0 to Serbia in the Group E clash, Granit Xhaka equalised for his side with an absolute thunderbolt of a strike from outside the box.
Many watching would have been left lost for words but not RTÉ commentator Geroge Hamilton who described the goal as “an absolute stonker!”
“What an absolute stonker from Granit Xhaka”

It’s a word we’d probably expect to hear come out of Brian Kerr‘s mouth before anyone else’s.
It’s not the first time and won’t be the last that George has perfectly summed up the feelings of his audience. On this day, June 22, two years ago he gave us one of his most memorable lines ever when Ireland beat Italy 1-0 at Euro 2016. For the day that’s in it, here it is again.
“It’s there! Robbie Brady brings us all to our feet in Lille!”
“Well is that it, have we seen the moment pass when it might have happened, let’s hope not…Hoolahan, inviting.. IT’S THERE!!”.
