PICS: TD Has Constituency Office Destroyed After Seanad Passes Legislation For Abortion

Darragh Berry

On Thursday evening, the Seanad passed a bill which now means that Abortion will be legally available in Ireland from the start of next year.

The bill was supported by the Dáil at the start of December and was passed on Thursday by 27 votes to 5.

A vote to repeal the Eighth Amendment was passed by a margin of 66% to 34% in May of this year.

Minister for Health Simon Harris said about the vote that:

“Just over 200 days ago, you, the people of Ireland voted to repeal the 8th so we could care for women with compassion.

“Today we have passed the law to make this a reality. A vote to end lonely journeys, end the stigma and support women’s choices in our own country.”

However, some people were still very angry with the outcome of the vote.

Sligo and Fine Gael TD Tony McLoughlin had his office destroyed last night with graffiti that said “baby killers”, “Fine Gael Baby Killers” and “Scumbags.”

In a statement on Twitter, McLoughlin said:

“So disappointed to see this morning that my busy constituency office in #Sligo has been vandalised and defaced overnight.

“We live in a proud democracy and despite one’s opinion on any referendum, this behaviour can never condoned. Gardai on site investigating criminal damage.”
