The World Ploughing Championships will occur alongside the national edition of the event.
After Russia was stripped of its hosting duties, Ireland became host for the 67th World Ploughing Championships, specifically Laois. Just mere weeks after hosting the first Electric Picnic in three years, Laois will take on this mammoth event. And as with EP, the World Ploughing Championships were called off for two years in light of the pandemic.
The event was supposed to take place in St Peterburg last month, however given the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, the Championships had to be moved. According to The Journal, Ireland has hosted the Championships on six other occasions, making them no strangers to the event. Ireland last hosted in 2006. You can check out how the site is coming along in the below TikTok (via @nationalploughing).
Not only will Laois host the World Ploughing Championships, they will be hosting our National Ploughing Championships that same week. So we can see both events take place from the 20th-22nd September 2022.
The World event will take place on the 21st and 22nd, while the National edition will take up the full three days in Ratheniska, Co Laois.
According to The Journal, Minister Sean Fleming congratulated the organisation for their, “quick organisational skills in pulling this world event together at short notice.”
Up to 300,000 people are expected to attend.
