The distinct lack of available hospital beds in this country has been at the forefront of the news for what seems like decades – however, the embarrassing and mortifying number has come altogether clear this morning as the figure for today’s waiting patients has been released.

It was revealed today that there are 289 people on trolleys in hospitals across the country today.

According to the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation, a huge number of 34 people are waiting and in need of a bed at University Hospital Limerick – the highest number of this kind in the country.

Cork University Hospital is next on the list with 31 people on trolleys and overflow areas of wards.
