Weather warning issued as Met Éireann forecast flooding this week

Two counties will get the brunt of it pretty much all day today.

Over the weekend we reported that Ireland had reported its coldest temperatures of the winter so far, dropping to as low as -8 in places.

This week, you’ll be happy to hear that the worst of the cold is behind us (for now), but you may be slightly less happy to hear that it is about to be replaced by some very heavy rain.

Met Éireann are predicting areas of flooding across a few days this week, starting off with the status yellow rain warning they’ve issued for two counties this morning.

“Persistent and occasionally heavy rainfall may cause some localised flooding” is what can be expected in Mayo and Sligo, with the warning in place from 12pm today until 12pm tomorrow (Tuesday, January 12).

Beyond that, Tuesday night looks like it will bring potential flooding to a different part of the country, with Met Eireann forecasting the following:

“Rain will continue for Tuesday night, bringing a flood risk to Ulster, the rain will remain patchier along the south coast.”

The rest of the week goes back and forth between slightly warmer (as high as 11 degrees during the day on Wednesday!) but accompanied by rain, or the clouds part and the temperatures drop (back to -1 on Thursday night).

So, basically, bring a raincoat AND a jumper, just in case.
