“Widespread snowfall” possible but no ‘Beast from the East’ next week, forecaster says

Ireland faces the possibility of ‘widespread snow’ by the middle of next week but we won’t see a repeat of 2018’s ‘Beast from the East’, according to a weather expert.

Yesterday, it was reported that National Directorate for Fire and Emergency Management (NDFEM) had met to discuss the imminent cold spell and were “preparing for a severe weather response if necessary.”

Evelyn Cusack of Met Éireann said that a storm system moving in from the Atlantic from Wednesday night “has the potential to cause some very inclement conditions,” but forecaster Aoife Kelly has told the Irish Independent that “during the second half of the week there is definitely a possibility of a widespread snowfall but the Beast from the East was a deep enough depression over Western Europe whereas this system is bringing in colder air from the north.”

She added that “It’s not coming from the same direction, although there is still a chance of widespread snowfall but it’s not going to be of the same magnitude.”

Currently, Met Éireann forecasts that it will be ‘bitterly cold and wintry into next week’ and you can follow their updates here.
