There is nothing worse than having to watch your spending whilst on holiday, or even just trying to find something within your budget that you may enjoy. So we’ve decided to take the effort out of it all for you and put together a list of things to do in Barcelona on the cheap and by cheap, we mean free.
1. Free museums on Sundays
All city run museums are free on Sundays between 3pm to 8pm. Others are often free on specific dates per month – normally the first Wednesday or Sunday. Check individual websites for details on that.
2. Head to the beach
Barcelona has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Barceloneta is the most popular but if you want something a little less crowded we’d recomend heading north a bit to the Fòrum area.
3. Seek out street art
Barcelona has a strong history of street art and in the El Raval and Poblenou areas you will find some amazing pieces. Barcelona’s graffiti artists are a very proud bunch so you’ll definitely find some examples of their great work.
4. Be enchanted at the Font Màgica
Built all the way back in 1929, Barcelonas Font Màgica has been drawing tourists ever since. This water, sound and light show is pretty cool to watch – even if it is kind of cheesy to watch water jets in sync to 80s music.
5. Wander through Plaça Reial
Look out for Gaudí’s first piece of commissioned work for the city – lamp-posts featuring coiled dragon-headed serpents leading up to a winged helmet.
6. Barri Gòtic
Cobblestone alleyways lined with bars and quirky shops and dotted with quiet little plaças, in the atmospheric medieval quarter of Barri Gòtic. What more can you really ask for?
7. Free music
There’s always something on in the area. Whether it’s jazz in the park, a poetry reading or a kids’ workshop. Visit For Free for information on upcoming events.
8. Be awed by La Catedral
In the heart of Barri Gòtic, the colossal La Catedral is as impressive outside as it is within. Free entry in the morning and late afternoon makes it worth venturing inside to take in its soaring domed ceilings and pillars.
