A Washington Irish pub is suing a Boston Irish pub for having the same name

These two pubs are having their Spider-man pointing moment.

Not even the US is big enough for two Dubliner pubs. A dispute has erupted between long-established Irish pub The Dubliner, based in Washington, DC, and a much newer pub, also called The Dubliner, based in Boston.

Despite the fact that the pubs are entire states away, and there are 430 miles (or 692 kilometres) between them, The Dubliner in DC, which was originally established in 1975, believes that the shared name is confusing for customers.

According to Universal Hub,

“In the suit against the East Coast Tavern Group, filed today in US District Court in Boston, the Washington Dubliner, founded in 1975, is asking for the Boston Dubliner, opened last year in the space where Kinsale used to be in Center Plaza, to be ordered to change its name and pay all the profits it’s made, plus damages and attorney’s fees to be determined by the court.”

They filed their complaint against the Boston pub on March 14th, 2023. Prior to this date, the Dubliner in DC sent the Dubliner in Boston a cease and desist letter in October 2022, to no avail.

The entire complaint is available to currently available to read online.
