From distilleries to food tours to oyster farms, there’s so much to enjoy along the west coast.

If there’s one expression that best sums up our holiday priorities it’s “Eat, drink and be merry.”

Getaways are made for indulging in tasty bites, delving into Ireland’s rich food and drink culture and nibbling on local delicacies, and the Wild Atlantic Way is a hub for food and drink experiences. Previously we explored some of our favourite foodie spots in the southern half of the region. This time we’re going further north with some of the best places to tantalise your tastebuds in Mayo, Sligo and Donegal.

Ready to indulge? Add these exciting food and drink experiences to your getaway itinerary as you explore this sliver of the Wild Atlantic Way.

Croagh Patrick Seafood and Tours, Co. Mayo

Unsurprisingly, the Wild Atlantic Way is home to some delicious seafood, and a tour with Croagh Patrick Seafood and Tours offers you an immersive way to experience it. During the Oyster Farm Tour, you’ll get the opportunity to explore a working aquaculture farm and learn about Ireland’s tradition of oyster cultivation. Afterwards, you’ll hand-pick your own oysters, learn to shuck them like a pro and enjoy them in the picturesque surrounds of Croagh Patrick.

Sliabh Liag Distillers, Co. Donegal

For a distillery visit surrounded by natural beauty, pay a visit to Sliabh Liag Distillers on your next trip to the Wild Atlantic Way. Start by taking in the peaceful, remote setting and then head inside for a tour. During the experience, you’ll discover how the smoky whiskey produced here is inspired by the rugged Donegal countryside. You’ll also get an inside look into how Sliabh Liag Distillers honour Donegal’s almost-lost whiskey tradition, and how they keep it alive today.

Sligo Oyster Experience, Co. Sligo

For a unique foodie adventure paired with next-level views, book a guided tour with the Sligo Oyster Experience. Here, you’ll get exclusive access to a working oyster farm and gain insight into the level of expertise and care that goes into farming this tasty seafood. As you learn and explore, you’ll take in panoramic views of Sligo’s mountainous scenery, including Benbulben and Knocknarea, and Sligo Bay. The Sligo Oyster Experience concludes with a tasting, where you’ll enjoy local oysters and other refreshments.

Connacht Whiskey Distillery, Co. Mayo

One way to gain a deeper understanding of Ireland’s whiskey tradition is with a visit to the Connacht Whiskey Distillery in Ballina. Book your tour in advance of your visit and then step inside this working distillery and embark on the Moy Tour and Tasting Experience. During the experience, you’ll learn about the ingredients and processes involved in whiskey distillation before heading into the Mullarkey Bar. There, you’ll get to sample some of Connacht Whiskey’s products while enjoying the view of the gentle River Moy.

Taste of Sligo Food Tours, Co. Sligo

Sligo is a food lover’s haven and you can experience the town at its most delicious with the Taste of Sligo Food Tours. On a 2.5 hour tour, you’ll visit between 5-7 beloved Sligo venues where you’ll sample a variety of dishes made with fresh local ingredients. In addition to these tasty bites, you’ll also have the opportunity to sample craft beers, wine and whiskey. As you explore, you’ll soak up the buzzy atmosphere of the town, which will come to life thanks to the creative storytelling of your guide.
