Research shows wine is Ireland’s second favourite beverage

Katy Thornton

Drinks Ireland recently released some facts about wine-drinking in Ireland.

In a new study done by Drinks Ireland, they discovered some Irish wine facts, including that it was Ireland’s second favourite beverage. It comes as a runner-up to beer, which shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone.

Despite this, their study showed that wine sales declined by 13% between 2020 and 2021, and that Ireland has the highest excise on wine in the EU. According to the Drinks Ireland website:

Wine sales increased during lockdowns in 2020, despite overall alcohol consumption declining during this time, as consumers moved away from categories like beer and wine that are popular in pubs. But the reopening of the on-trade sector later last year saw sales of wine fall.”

Drinks Ireland says that wine sales dropped to their lowest level in 2021 since 2015.

As for the type of wine Ireland’s most fond of, white wine comes out on top, with 48% of the population favouring it. Red wine follows closely behind with 45%, while studies show that rosé sales have increased by 7% in recent years.

And when it comes to which countries do the best wine, Ireland’s favourites were those that came from Chile, Spain, and Australia.
