Taoiseach: “We will not be reopening hugely on March 5”

An Taoiseach Micheál Martin has said that “we will not be reopening hugely” when the current set of Level 5 restrictions end on March 5.

Speaking on The Neil Prendeville Show on Cork’s Red FM this morning, An Taoiseach Micheál Martin said that while people will “not be trapped in their homes until the end of the year, the Government will “have to decide” on what to do when March 5 rolls around.

When asked if the 5km exercise limit will be lifted on that date, Martin said that “that’s something that we’ll have to weigh up at the time and we’re not making a decision on that right now.

On the possibility of hospitality reopening in May, he said that it is “too early” to make a decision on this and added that Ireland is “in for prolonged suppression of the virus and that means we will not be reopening hugely on March 5.” Last week, An Tánaiste Leo Varadkar suggested that the country could move to Level 4 restrictions in March.

It has been confirmed today that there are more people vaccinated against Covid-19 worldwide than those who have the virus.
