What does Level 4 entail? Varadkar suggests that could be where we’re heading on March 5

James Fenton

Leo Varadkar has suggested that Ireland could move to Level 4 Covid-19 restrictions, potentially with some modifications, once current Level 5 measures expire on March 5.

It was confirmed earlier this week that Ireland will remain under Level 5 Covid-19 restrictions until March 5. As most of us know by now, that means the hospitality trade can only offer takeaway and delivery services, no visitors are allowed into homes except for essential reasons and people are only permitted to exercise within 5km of their homes.

Last night, at a Fine Gael meeting, An Tánaiste Leo Varadkar said that Ireland could enter Level 4, perhaps with modifications if the situation allows on March 5. What would that mean and would it be a major change from Level 5? Find out everything you need to know below…

Social visits

Visits to homes or gardens would still not be permitted, except for essential reasons

Pubs & Restaurants

Level 4 would allow some respite for certain members of the industry. Outdoor dining would be allowed for a maximum of 15 patrons. Government guidelines on Level 4 state that so-called ‘wet pubs’ would also be allowed to serve outdoors but this could change with modifications.

Weddings

Up to six guests

Domestic travel

The 5km limit would be gone but people would be asked to remain in their county except for work, education and other essential purposes.

Schools

Level 4 guidelines state that ‘schools and creches will remain open with protective measures. Further, higher and adult education moves primarily online with appropriate protective measures in place for essential attendance on site.’ Again, this could be altered with modifications.

Hairdressers & Barbers

Under current Level 4 guidelines, these services would largely remain closed – ‘Essential retail and businesses that are primarily outdoors only can remain open. All other retail and personal services closed.’
