Falling this Sunday, there are plenty of ways to mark Father’s Day and show you care. Here are a few gift ideas should you need suggestions.
The past few weeks of lockdown have reminded many of us, myself included, of the importance of family and how spending time with loved ones is something that shouldn’t be taken for granted. Some of us found ourselves lucky enough to be isolating with family, and while that certainly had its challenges, it also provided us with one thing we often complain we don’t have enough of – time.
Time spent with family is always time well spent and if you can combine that with a reason to celebrate well then you’ve mastered the art of making lockdown fun. Most things call for celebration in my house these days – be that making it through hump day, finding a bag of flour in the local grocery shop or even making it home from your walk before the rain comes. And so in following that train of thought, Father’s Day most certainly calls for celebration.
Falling on Sunday, June 21st (that’s THIS Sunday btw), there are plenty of ways you can mark the occasion and while it’s never so much about the gift as it is the thought, it’s always nice to have something small to show you care. Here are a few suggestions to get you going:
Whiskey
Always a safe bet for the whiskey lovers, Jameson has several different options to choose from. Play it straight and go with a bottle of the good stuff, plain and simple or spice things up and opt for an engraved tumbler gift set. There will be no stealing his glasses once his name is on them though so that one could backfire on you…

Sunglasses
The weather may be absolutely miserable out there now but that’s not to say it will stay like that, and if I know Ireland but at all, the sun will be back out shining in no time. Crann specialises in eco-friendly sunglasses made from plants and they’re as stylish as they are sustainable.
If sunnies don’t aren’t really your dad’s thing, Crann also make watches handcrafted from recycled materials.
Books
Books are kind of a one size fits all type of gift, so if you’re really at a loss of what to get, browse through some of the many titles available at Designist and you’re sure to find something your dad will like. You can’t really go wrong with a good book.
Designist also stock loads of other quirky bits and pieces including a beanie with a built-in headlamp that I reckon most dads would go ga-ga for. As well as plenty of Father’s Day cards in case the homemade ones won’t cut it this year.
Bodyboard
Ireland may not be known for its beach-weather but its beaches are pretty spectacular. Especially in summer when it’s slightly less cold and the brave few venture into the water for a dip. If you’ve been trying to convince your dad to join you on your swimrise escapades, a recycled bodyboard might be just the thing to sway him. Stocked at Jiminy you can pick one up starting from €119.99. A gift for him but one that you might get to make use of too if you play your cards right.
Razors
A practical present but a present nonetheless. Reuzi stocks beautiful minimalist razors that definitely look the part. And they’re better for the planet than the disposable plastic ones your da usually picks up, so that’s what you might call a win-win.
Bicycle Toolkit
With most looking for ways to avoid public transport wherever possible, there’s bound to be a surge in people rediscovering their love for cycling in the coming weeks. And if your dad is anything like mine, he’ll be delira to have his own little toolbox for when things don’t go to plan and you need to fix a flat, tighten the chain or adjust the seat. This one from The Kind includes seven ball end hex keys, a chain breaker tool, a three socket tri tool, four spanner sets, poi-drive and a flat head combo screwdriver. Complete mumbo jumbo to me, but will likely make sense to your dad and makes for a really nice Father’s Day gift.
