The 11 Most Unforgettable Ads Of The Last Decade

fionnuala

We’re some lads to produce a gas ad.

From beer and cheese to mobile contracts, we Irish have a way of selling stuff that is, eh, completely unique to us.

So, we decided to take a trip down memory lane and look back at some of our faves from the last ten years of television.

1. Piggy Sue (Vodafone)

This is one man’s tale of his encounter with a life-changing pig and may or may not be loosely based on ‘Babe’.

We won’t talk about its horrendously cringe-worthy sequels. (It a sequel if it’s an ad? Who knows. All we know is we want no part in it.)

Bonus points for featuring the dreamy Michael Hayes.

2. Carlsberg in Irish (Carlsberg)

Carlsberg managed to single-handedly illustrate how we’re a nation of chancers in less than 50 seconds. That’s pretty impressive if you ask me.

Also, don’t pretend like you’ve never done this before while abroad.

3. The Guinness Christmas ad (Guinness)

Christmas ads, in general, tend to be in a league of their own – we can pretty much blame John Lewis for that one.

But there’s something about this Guinness ad coming on that guarantees a case of the warm and fuzzies.

(Also, apologies for bringing up Christmas. We know it’s only September).

4. Is this a date? (Barry’s Tea)

It feels like this ad was released much much longer ago than 2007, but somehow it has stood the test of time.

A modern remake would include Tinder, natch.

5. Féach ar seo lads! (Chef Ketchup)

This put the fear of God into any child planning to attend Irish college in the near future.

Fun fact: a friend of a friend shifted this guy on a night out recently. Claim to fame or wha’?

6. The sod (Kerrygold butter)

We’re not crying over a lump of earth and butter. Nope. No way.

This is a gorgeously nostalgic ad and beautifully shot.

7. ‘In a filing cabinet!’ (Donegal Catch)

This is another one that seems like it was released AGES ago.

An instant classic!

8. Txt speak (Kilmeadan Cheese)

How shit do your friends have to be for your conversations to revolve around cheese sandwiches? Or sorry, should that be ‘cheeez sndwch’?

Next time you get a text you don’t like, respond with ‘ur ritings gn wird?!?!?’

9. Au pair (Eircom)

Another set of absolute chancers, and they’re not even out of secondary school.

Eircom’s series of ‘worst case scenarios’ really stood out in 2011, but this cheeky pair were our faves back in the day.

Learning French my arse!

10. The perfect surprise (Three)

What do you get the person who has everything for Christmas?

Another (Christmas) cracker of an ad from the phone provider last season. This had us all asking for clouds off Mr. Claus – and hugging our dads.

11. Rainbow (The National Lottery)

Another one to give you a serious case of the feels – this is definitely one of the most stand-out ads of the last ten years.

No gimmicks – just sunshine-y happy people and bucket loads of colour. A winning formula.
