We love a good sporting homecoming here in Ireland.
The manic scenes in Dublin after Italia ’90 have gone down in folklore. Katie Taylor brought Bray to its knees when she returned from London with Olympic gold in 2012. Every year, All-Ireland football and hurling champions are whooped and cheered long into the night at hastily-built arenas in towns across the country. Yesterday, though, it was the turn of Grand National hero Tiger Roll.
For the second year in a row, the horse clinched victory at the Grand National as he and jockey Davy Russell did Ireland proud over at Aintree. The pair’s entire team celebrated victory last night, and the party wasn’t restricted to solid ground, as this story will attest.
Today though, sore heads or not, the people of Summerhill in Co. Meath wanted to show their appreciation for their most famous son. Trainer Gordon Elliott is a native of the town and he was present, along with owner Michael O’Leary, as Tiger Roll was paraded through the streets in front of an adoring crowd.
The plaudits are much-deserved for everyone involved and the question is, can the lads make it three in a row next year? Tiger Roll has already been made 8/1 favourite by the bookies so you’d have to say there’s every chance.
