You can sleep in an ACTUAL wine barrel at this vineyard in Portugal

Sarah Finnan

Portugal seems to be one of the new cool spots to holiday and while everyone always talks about the unreal pastéis de nata (Portuguese custard tarts that are absolutely divine) there is less talk about the wine.

Surprising considering it’s the home of Port and Douro wine.

Which is why a stop to the Douro Valley Vineyard should be top of your list next time you find yourself planning a trip abroad.

Quinta da Pacheca, otherwise known as the Wine House Hotel, is home to some of the quirkiest accommodation around.

Having only launched this year, it’s a novelty that not many have enjoyed so get in there before the masses find out.

The cylindrical-shaped structures have wooden panelling on the outside and come complete with private bathrooms with walk-in shower, comfortable double beds and even air-conditioning.

Much more high-tech than I was expecting.

Each barrel also has a private terrace which can only be described as relaxation station. My favourite part has to be the addition of a skylight to each structure so guests can watch the stars before drifting off to sleep.

How peaceful does that sound?

A centuries year old vineyard, the wine here is absolutely delicious (duh!). Grapes are grown on the hills along the Douro River valley, to the east of Porto, and there are vines and olive groves covering the majority of the property.

I can think of nothing better than a weekend of wine drinking and stargazing. Getting to sleep in an actual wine barrel would be the cherry on top.
