Last week we heard that Michael D could be going up against a former burlesque performer, pro-life campaigner massive Trump fan, Sarah-Louise Mulligan.

A candidate so controversial that it was tipped that she might even follow in the footsteps of the American president that she loves so well.

As well as this, various others have been tipped to give Higgins a run for his money including two Dragons’ Den stars, Sean Gallagher and Gavin Duffy and now it seems like two will become three.

Their television co-star, Peter Casey is said to be interested in running alongside Duffy and Gallagher according to The Irish Independent.

There’s a lot to consider. It’s the most interesting election we’ve ever had with some strong candidates. Never before has an incumbent been challenged and beaten,” Casey said on his website and it is understood that he has contacted a number of TD’s looking for support.

The news comes one day after the date for the presidential election was announced.

Up to 12 candidates – including Casey – are planning to challenge Michael D Higgins so far.

It was confirmed this morning that one of those interested, Seán Gallagher, will definitely be running for President and submissions have been put in to 10 local authorities overnight seeking a nomination.

Higgins will automatically gets his name on the ballot as the current president while the rest will need the backing of at least 20 Oireachtas members or four local authorities.
