The Interesting Reason Why So Many Irish People Have Coeliac Disease Has Been Revealed

If the very thoughts of gluten make your stomach muscles clench in pain, you’re not alone. It’s estimated that 1 in 100 Irish people have coeliac disease, with many people still undiagnosed.

It’s a total nightmare trying to avoid the stuff, and to top it all off, research has shown that Ireland has one of the highest rates of coeliac disease in Europe. 

Why? Well it’s all down to those pesky Vikings…

A recent DNA map discovery by the Royal College of Surgeons in Dublin finally proves that Irish people have Viking and Nordic genes that are to blame for our delicate tummies. 

Compared with the rest of Europe, the Irish have higher rates of cystic fibrosis, coeliac disease, and galactosemia (a metabolic disorder).

It’s thought that by looking at our ancient genes, doctors will be able to match organ donors better and have a more thorough understanding of our health.
