The Government has this evening announced a series of new measures as the country looks to slow recent spikes in Covid-19 cases.

Speaking at Government Press Centre this evening, An Taoiseach Micheál Martin confirmed that the new measures will be in place until September 13 at the earliest.

The Cabinet is following the National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET)’s advice to encourage businesses to revert to working from home.

Indoor events will be reduced to a maximum of six people, down from 50. Exceptions include businesses like shops and restaurants, as well as weddings which involve a maximum of 50 people. Outdoor gatherings will be limited to 15 people.

As well as that, the public is being advised to avoid public transport where possible and to wear face covering in cars, if they are traveling in the vehicle with someone who isn’t from the same household. All sporting events will take place behind closed doors.

Indoor gatherings in homes should be limited to six people from a maximum of three different households, while anyone over the age of 70 is being advised to avoid crowded or congregated settings and to shop during designated hours.

The Government is hoping to finalise a ‘roadmap for resilience and recovery’ before September 13, in which the public will be told how Ireland’s economy can remain open while suppressing the virus.

At this evening’s press briefing, Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly announced a total of 190 Covid-19 cases reported today.
