Honestly, tell us something we don’t know.
Ireland is not having a great time when it comes to rankings and awards. Last week we claimed the title of loneliest country in Europe, and this week it turns out we are the 6th most stressed out. Which doesn’t exactly come as a surprise given the housing crisis, the cost-of-living crisis, etcetera, etcetera, but it still doesn’t feel great.

The news of our ranking comes from CBD experts CBDolie.nl, who examined Europe’s stress levels using the following categories:
- Depression prevalence – estimated share of the population who had depressive disorders in the past year, whether or not they were diagnosed.
- Anxiety prevalence – estimated share of the population who had anxiety disorders in the past year, whether or not they were diagnosed.
- Reports of stress levels – % of respondents who said they experienced this feeling frequently.
- Reports of sadness levels – % of respondents who said they experienced this feeling frequently.
- Reports of enjoyment levels – % of respondents who said they have not experienced this feeling frequently.
- Average weekly hours worked – average number of actual weekly hours worked per week for ages 15-64.
The breakdown
Ultimately it was Greece that took the top spot, scoring high for stress and depression prevalence. 6.52% of residents report depression, the highest in Europe, while 57% reported frequent stress. Turkey and Portugal came in second and third place; Turkey had the highest level of respondents reporting stress (64%), while Portugal had the highest rate of people reporting anxiety.
In comparison Ireland scored a 49.2/100 on the stress scale, placing just below Cyprus (5th) and Malta (4th).
Despite the notoriously high cost of living in Denmark, they ranked as the least stressful country to live in in Europe. Just 12% of respondents claimed to feel little enjoyment and pleasure, the second lowest behind Iceland, and there were less feelings of frequent stress.
It should be noted that Ukraine and Russie were omitted from these results due to the ongoing war.
