A total of 102 people have died as a result of the flu in Ireland this winter.

A new HSE report has revealed that 2,889 cases of hospitalisation as a result of contracting the flu were reported to the HSE’s Health Protection Surveillance Centre (HPSC) this winter.

413 of those cases were reported just this week, according to the Irish Independent.

The HSPC has said this level of influenza activity is one of the highest since their records began in 2000.

Two strains of the virus, Influenza B and A (H3N2), are circulating at high levels while another, Influenza A(H1N1)pdm09, is circulating at a lower level.

Meanwhile, hospitalisation figures remain high, with those aged 65 and older reporting the highest levels.

The HSPC are advising people to avoid spreading the flu by covering your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough and sneeze, and disposing of the tissue as soon as possible.

Washing your hands as soon as you can is also recommended to prevent the spread of germs and reduce the risk of transmission.
