March is nearly upon us, but it feels like we’ve slipped backwards into the depths of winter… and it looks as though it might get even worse.
Met Éireann has already issued a week-long status yellow weather warning for Ireland — which comes with promises of significant wind chill, severe frosts and disruptive snow showers — but meteorologist Cathal Nolan of Midland Weather Channel thinks that conditions are likely to become even more hazardous, resulting in an upgrade to a status red weather warning.
The Offaly weather forecaster has said that, after assessing the weather event, he’s concluded that “Ireland will be impacted by one of the worst spells of wintry weather since 1982″… which really doesn’t sound like good news to us.
Nolan believes that next Thursday and Friday will exhibit the heaviest instances of snowfall and, while it’s difficult to predict, he thinks it’s within the realms of possibility to think that the midlands could receive as much as 30-40cm of snow.
If Nolan is correct about the magnitude of this weather event, then schools, universities and businesses in the midlands may be forced to close during the second half of the week due to impassable roads.
Could we have another Hurricane Ophelia-esque nationwide day off on our hands? Guess we’ll find out soon enough…
