If there’s one thing that helps us roll out of bed in the morning it’s knowing that once we’re up we’re one step closer to the first coffee of the day.
But unfortunately, it looks like drinking coffee first thing in the morning, and on an empty stomach, could be doing you more harm than good – especially if you tend to get bloated regularly.
Yep, we’re devastated too.
According to Cosmopolitan, a new study has found that drinking coffee on an empty stomach triggers an increase in stomach acid, which can cause bloating, indigestion and heartburn if you have a sensitive stomach lining.
Adam Simon, a medical officer at PushDoctor, also said that coffee has some more negative affects.
He said: “It can increase the amount of water you pass and can potentially create symptoms of dehydration. It can affect your pulse, causing an irregular heartbeat by putting pressure on the heart and it can adversely affect your blood pressure.”
He added: “Too much caffeine can give you jitters, shakes and other withdrawal effects, including mood changes.”
So although the best part of the morning basically is a cup of coffee, you may want to avoid drinking it until you’ve had a good breakfast.
