We’re so close to the bank holiday weekend that we can almost touch it. If you’re sensible, you’ll have pushed some money aside to enjoy the extra long weekend and if, like us, you just spend without thinking, we pray for your bank account.
But one thing you do not want to happen at any time of the year is for hackers to get at your account and take your hard earned cash.
And there’s not one, not two but three scams in circulation as we start the month of June.
AIB have released a statement online outlining the facts about the scams where hackers are pretending to be people from the bank.
They said that:
“At AIB we take security seriously. We aim to protect you against the threats associated with internet fraud.
Here, you will find details of specific current security threats to our online banking customers and alerts that you should be aware of.
“We have received reports of 3 scams currently in circulation. Some customers have reported receiving fraudulent calls claiming to:
- Assist you with claiming a tax rebate
- Be a law enforcement official asking you to assist them with preventing a crime
- Be a Utility Company: e.g. Telephone/Mobile phone provider, Broadband provider, Software company offering to “fix” PC or broadband problems
“The callers will attempt to trick you into divulging your banking or card credentials and provide codes from your Card Reader in order to access your online banking and make fraudulent payments.
“NEVER disclose codes from your AIB Card Reader over the phone. NEVER disclose the full five digits of your Personal Access Code (PAC).
“If you have received such a call and disclosed any of your Banking details please contact us immediately.”
So if you’re with AIB and you see receive something that’s rather strange, do not respond and get in touch with the bank ASAP.
