Report calls for revitalisation of Limerick City Centre

The ‘Future Development of Limerick City’ report by Indecon has been published and makes a number of recommendations that would see more people attracted to living in Limerick City Centre. The report aims to benchmark Limerick against other cities in Ireland.

Among the recommendations made in the report the acceleration of important projects in the Limerick 2030 Economic and Spatial Plan.

The report points out that Limerick is one of the more affordable cities in Ireland to live in, and its population is expected to grow by 10% by 2040. Although over the last 20 years, there has been an increase in the number of vacant buildings in the city. The report found a significant drop in footfall in Limerick and a brain drain of graduates, especially those in the fields of science, technology, engineering and maths.

Chief Economist with Limerick Chamber Catriona Cahill explained the repopulation of the city will have a better impact than any other policy.

Meanwhile, Hugh Hennessy, Divisional Director with Indecon said that the availability of daytime, evening and nighttime activities in Limerick City Centre is important, taking shape in the form of “residential, commercial, cultural, educational and public realm initiatives.”
