Everything You Need To Know In The Lead Up To Electric Picnic 2018

Éadaoin Fitzmaurice

It’s become an Irish tradition to finish off the summer holiday break with one last hurrah at Electric Picnic.

This year will be my fourth and it’s one of the events I most look forward to during the year. This year’s line up is bigger and better than ever so it’s guaranteed to unforgettable.

Time to start rooting out your boho pants, bomber jackets and hair glitter because the countdown is ON.

Here’s everything you need to know:

What’s The Suss?

Electric Picnic has been around for quite some time, in fact this will be its fourteenth year in production. It’s a music festival that celebrates art, culture and creativity.

As well as music acts there are tonnes of other stalls, stages and activities to try out while you’re there.

Where Is It?

The festival takes place in Stradbally, Co. Laois.

During the festival, the entire site is transformed into colourful and creative wonderland. Everything from the main stage to twigs on the trees are decorated with hand-crafted artworks. Walking through the forest, you’ll see lanterns hanging above and decorations at every corner. You’ll find yourself continuously coming across new places and things to explore.

For those who really want to chill for the weekend, there’s even an al fresco spa – So don’t forget your swimwear.

How Do I Get There?

The easiest way to get there is by car or by bus.

There will be buses leaving from Dublin City down by Custom House Key and tickets will be available closer to the date.

There is free parking for all cars at the festival.

When’s It On?

The festival will take place from 31 August to 2nd September.

What’s The Camping Sitch?

There are four general campsites: Janis Joplin, Andy Warhol, Jimmy Hendrix and Oscar Wilde. There is also a specific campsite for campervans, eco camping, family camping and boutique camping and pink moon and pod pads.

You will camp based on the ticket you bought, most tickets are for the general campsites.

The sites will open at 4pm on the Thursday and close at 1pm on the Monday.

Who’s Playing?

This year hosts a range of Irish and international artists alike.

Who To Look Out For?

So if you’re buzzed for EP, I’m pretty sure you’re already fully aware that Kendrick Lamar, N.E.R.D, Massive Attack, Dua Lipa, Ben Howard, George Ezra and The Kooks are playing.

I won’t bore you with info about these guys because I’m pretty sure you’re already familiar with their music and what they’re about.

Let’s just take a moment however, to take in the fact that we’ll be seeing all of those incredible artists in the same weekend, omg.

Here are some of the other acts that you won’t want to miss out on.

Tom Misch

A 21 year old British singer-songwriter and DJ, Tom Misch has recently become one f my most played Spotify artists. Mellow beats that are still good for a bop – The dream combo.

If you haven’t listened to this guy yet, you need to.

Tom Tripp

I first came across Tom Tripp on Mura Masa’s latest album and I adored his voice. I then went on my usual YouTube hunt to find he has quite a few of his own tunes.

He’s kind of like a lighter, mellow version of The Weeknd – Lush awl’ voice on him.

Jorja Smith

I’m beyond obsessed with this girl. In fact, I’d go as far to say that her latest album is the best of 2018 so far.

I can just picture everyone sitting on the grass in the sun listening to her and I cannot bloody wait for it.

Dermot Kennedy

A Dubliner that is making waves in the music industry right now, Dermot is known for his uniquely haunting and raspy voice.

This guy is going to be massive so go see him at EP while you can.

Jungle

If you’re looking for a good bop this year, these guys are the ones for you.

I’ve seen them a few times and they kill it every single time. Deffo my highlight from Metropolis this year.

To get you really in the mood, here’s a playlist with all of the acts that have been announced thus far.

What Else Should I Check Out?

If you’re looking for something other than music, there’s plenty to see and do at Electric Picnic this year.

Art:

The perfect opportunity to nab those deadly Instagrams that you’ll be sharing for the next six months. Throughout the site, you’ll find sculptures and art work hidden in every nook and cranny.

Comedy Tent:

The best place to have a giggle over the weekend. The Comedy Tent will host some of the best established and up-and-coming comedians in Ireland.

Greencrafts:

Time to get crafty!

The Greencrafts will host a wide range of tutorials and workshops. You can choose from over forty things to make from silver rings to wooden plates, slate pendants to willow baskets.

Mindfield:

This word arena hosts stimulating and spark-filled events to inform and educate.

There’ll be everything from readings, political debates, poetry sessions, science experiments and inspiring talks

Theatre of Food:

A foodies paradise awaits you at the theatre.

Learn from the best in the game through mixology workshops, food demonstrations and talks.

Fossett’s Circus:

Sure who doesn’t like the circus?

Here’s hoping this year is one of the best yet!

We can’t bloody wait.

See you there?
