There’s A Naked Bike Ride Taking Place In Cork This Weekend

mariemadden

If you’re around Cork this weekend, do not be alarmed if you’re approached by a large group of naked people on bicycles.

The city is taking part in this year’s World Nude Bicycle Ride, which is exactly what it sounds like.

People are encouraged to bring their bike out and leave their clothes at home on Saturday 10 June to highlight the vulnerability of cyclists on the road and the sustainability of bikes as a transport method.

It takes place in 70 locations all over the world and to be quite honest, it looks absolutely deadly.

So what’s it all about? It all started when six cyclists died in separate road accidents in Zaragoza, Spain in 2001. As a protest, friends of theirs cycled naked for an afternoon to draw attention to how vulnerable a cyclist is in a collision, and as a means of guaranteeing that motorists would notice them on this day at least. It has grown to a global phenomenon, taking place in more than 100 cities, has added the theme of global oil dependency, and has become a celebration of the power and individuality of the human body supporting sustainable transport.

It all begins in a secret location in Cork City which you’ll be told by phone at 2.30pm. If you want to get involved, drop an email to [email protected] for all the details.
