They should rename it ‘The New Cork Times’.
If you’re still reading after that admittedly questionable gag then we are eternally grateful. We probably won’t be writing for The New York Times any time soon, that’s for sure.
One person who is though is Brooklyn-based journo Brendan Spiegel and he’s given the Rebel City an amazing shout-out in an article published on Thursday. The piece is titled 36 Hours In Cork, Ireland and reads as a guide to spending a weekend in Ireland’s second city.
Spiegel highlights the multiculturalism of Cork, stating that while ‘the “rebel city” is famously proud of its Irish heritage, these days you’ll also find Asian, African and Middle Eastern outposts popping up along the River Lee’.
After “the surprise of Hurricane Ophelia barreling through this fall, Cork has recovered and is ready for the holiday season, when the streets are glowing with Christmas lights, outdoor food stalls and even a Ferris wheel offering sweeping city views”, Spiegel writes.
He also highlights a number of eating options including Iyer’s for Indian cuisine, The Rocket Man Food Co. for a big breakfast and dinner at Elbow Lane Brew & Smoke House.
Spiegel takes a particular shine to Kinsale and we have to say we agree with him having taken in its charm recently ourselves.
There are also comments on the changing nature of the beer industry in the city as Spiegel observes ‘locally brewed Beamish and Murphy’s once filled nearly every pint glass in town, but a surge in newer craft breweries means there’s an array of enticing new beers to pair with the vibrant selection of food at Cork’s diverse restaurants.’
All in all, Cork comes off pretty damn good in the piece and you can read the article in full here.
