Galway City Council has confirmed that a number of popular sites are closed until further notice to ensure social distancing.
Ireland is currently in phase 1 of the government’s roadmap to reopening society and people are allowed to meet outside in groups of up to four as long as the meeting point is 5km from each person’s home and all individuals remain two metres apart from each other.
However, to ensure that rules are being adhered to over the Bank Holiday Weekend, Galway City Council has confirmed that a number of popular sites are to stay closed until further notice.
A statement says: ‘In order to ensure social distancing, a number of areas across the city have been closed off/ restricted until further notice:
- Silverstrand has been closed off to cars
- The Claddagh Basin and the Spanish Arch have been closed off
- Blackrock Diving Tower and the road at the back of the golf course has also been closed
- The car park at Ballyloughane beach is in the process of being closed’

The statement concludes by saying: ‘Please continue to follow the national social distancing guidelines in place.’
Ireland is due to enter phase 2 of the roadmap on Monday, June 8 when the travel limit will be extended to 20km.
