This lesser known Kerry lake is the perfect place for a private picnic

Megan Cassidy

There are countless gorgeous trails to explore in the West of Ireland, but nothing feels quite like finding a secret spot (and then sharing your discovery).

The Dingle Pensinsula boasts loads of popular trails, but hidden in the shadow of Conor’s Pass you’ll find a lesser known walk that finishes up in one of the most peaceful hidden spots – perfect for a weekend picnic.

Loch a’ Duin Valley (The Lake of the Fort) is an archeological treasure trove. You’ll find ancient monuments dotted along the entire trail – wedge tombs, cooking slabs, and even ancient rock art will keep history buffs entertained throughout the entire walk which is a three-hour round trip starting and finishing at Kilmore Cross.

There’s a total of 89 stone structures in the valley, with many over 2,000 years old. While the trail is clearly marked – we recommend joining a walking tour to make sure you don’t miss a trick on this trail. (Check out Wild Water Adventures who do walking trails as well as Coasteering, Kayaking and open water swim coaching)

Here’s what you can expect.

Amazing views around every corner.

The panoramics are insane. Every bend in the river brings something more amazing than the last.

A nice, chilled pace.

This is flat terrain basically the whole way, so it’s suitable for all fitness levels and perfect if you want to bring the whole family and make a day of it.

It’s stunning whatever the weather.

But if it’s been raining – expect to get wet! This trail gets a little soggy in wet weather, so we wouldn’t recommend wearing new kicks.

Complete isolation

This is one of the less popular routes – which means it’s very likely you’ll have the lake all to yourself. Bliss.

Apart from the sheep

You’ll be sure to make some new fluffy friends along the way.

The lake is just thirty minutes from Tralee – and with the Tralee food festival just around the corner in May, it would be rude not to plan a stay in the Kingdom.
