Glendalough Distillery has won the prestigious Irish Distillery of the Year award at the New York International Spirits Competition.

The team behind Glendalough Distillery will be taking the plane back from JFK Airport absolutely laden down with awards. Winning the Irish Distillery of the year at the New York International Spirits Competition alongside securing the double Gold for its new Mizunara Single Malt and Double Barrel whiskeys and Gold for its Wild Rose Irish Gin.

Aligned with the International Beverage Competition Series, the competition saw over 1400 submissions from over 39 countries in 2022 alone.

This win comes as a massive achievement to the relatively new distillery, founded in 2011. Formed by a group of friends with a shared passion for reviving Irish craft distilling, the brand has subsequently become part of Mark Anthony Brands International (White Claw, Bearface, Dillion’s etc).

This win comes a couple of weeks after another US-based competition win which saw the 7-year Mizunara Single Malt grab double gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition. Judges of the competition which is the longest-running and largest global competition of its kind, remarked on the tasting notes of straw, fruit, honey and vanilla on the palate. Aged in Japanese Mizunara casks (meaning “water oak”) sourced from the island of Hokkaido, Japan, which cost ten times your average cask to produce. This price-point is down to the difficulty coopering them, as the trees grow in a twisted manner and must be twice the age of most oak before they can be felled.

Newly launched Wild Rose Irish Gin, is a small-batch made with fresh rose petals from the roses that grow around Distillery in Glendalough. Three varieties are brought together to create this naturally pink and floral gin, the wild rose from the Wicklow mountains, fragrant Heritage Roses, and the ancient Damask Rose.

Speaking on winning the award, Enda O’Sullivan, VP of Spirits Mark Anthony Brands International said, “we’re so passionate about crafting liquids with a profound sense of place, to have Glendalough recognised on the world stage gives us renewed ambition for the future.”
