Normal People has been released on BBC iPlayer and it’s being universally praised

James Fenton

Normal People, the much-anticipated TV adaptation of Sally Rooney’s novel, was released on BBC iPlayer today and it’s proving extremely popular.

Irish director Lenny Abrahamson has brought Normal People to the small screen, with all 12 episodes released today on the BBC iPlayer. The series stars Daisy Edgar-Jones and Paul Mescal as Marriane and Connell, two teenagers who begin a relationship in Co Sligo before having contrasting experiences of life at Trinity College in Dublin.

So far, the series looks well on its way to matching the popularity of Sally Rooney’s eponymous novel, with people falling over themselves to praise the show online.

Critics in the UK have been kind to the series as well, with The Guardian saying it’s a ‘small screen triumph’ and The Independent calling it ‘pitch-perfect.’

The first two episodes air on BBC One tomorrow night but Irish people don’t have that long to wait with a double bill being shown on RTE One on Tuesday, April 28.
