Hail, Thunder And Wintry Showers On The Way As Weather Prepares To Wreak Havoc

James Fenton

Take the rest of the week off work. Cancel your 5-a-side match. Tell your ma you won’t be seeing her ’til Monday. Whatever you do – do not go outside.

Met Éireann is predicting a fairly rough middle and end of the week with hail, thunder and wintry showers on the way. It all starts tonight apparently with rain developing in the northwest, ‘turning heavy and persistent for a time.’

Tomorrow (Wednesday) is when the fun really starts though with ‘widespread showers through the course of the afternoon’, some of which will contain ‘hail and thunder, possibly turning wintry on the hills in the north.’

Thursday is expected to be cold with frost slowly clearing in the morning before sleet arrives over Ulster and Connacht. Friday will see more sleet and showery outbreaks of rain which are expected to last until night.

Saturday will also be rainy while Sunday is expected to be a cold one with a ‘sharp frost’ on Sunday night.

Now is the time to make sure the heating is working, lads. A more detailed forecast for the week can be found here.
