Pubs could remain shut until ‘late-May or June’ as Government considers Level 5 extension

James Fenton

Pubs and restaurants could remain closed until ‘late-May or June’ as the Government considers extending current Level 5 restrictions into late-February.

Current restrictions are due to expire on January 31 but The Irish Times reports that next Tuesday’s Cabinet meeting is expected to result in an extension of Level 5 measures into late-February.

The publication also states that ‘it is understood the hospitality sector may not reopen properly until late May or early June.’ Senior figures in the industry had hoped to reopen in April but have been told that this outcome is unlikely.

The Department of Education is exploring the possibility of reopening schools in February if mobility has reduced enough to allow them to do so.

The Cabinet is due to make a decision on the extension of Level 5 restrictions next Tuesday.
