Picking the right post-wedding holiday destination can be tough.

Having just experienced the best day of your life, there’s a lot of pressure to make your honeymoon the cherry on top of your proverbial wedding cake.

Basically you want to end up someplace that fits your vision of paradise, so you can proceed to make your friends insanely jealous via Instagram.

1. Tanzania

About 30% of Tanzania’s land is dedicated to protecting animals and it’s one of the very best countries for safari holidays.

Home to the world’s densest population of lions, elephants, wildebeest, rhinos, and hippos, the Ngorongoro Crater is for the most intrepid of couples.

So if you’re wild about exotic animals, this Tanzania safari & Zanzibar honeymoon is right up your alley.

2. Bora Bora

There’s a reason Bora Bora is the most searched for honeymoon destination on Google, folks – it’s absolutely feckin’ gorgeous.

In the middle of the Pacific ocean, halfway between Australia and America, Bora Bora looks like heaven on Earth.

Which probably explains why hotel rooms on the island often charge several thousand per night

Not exactly one for thriftier couples, then.

3. Iceland

With its enormous Gullfoss waterfall, Mars-like landscapes, geysers, flowing lava, icebergs, and the Northern Lights, a trip to Iceland feels like a journey to another planet.

Not only are the sights otherworldly, but so are the experiences. Newlyweds can take a dip in Iceland’s Blue Lagoon spa, containing 6 million litres of geothermal seawater with a soothing average temperature of 38°C.

And with Wow Air now flying directly to Iceland from Dublin, it’s never been easier to take the plunge.

5. Costa Rica

Smaller than Ireland, you can see and do a lot in Costa Rica over the course of a very short holiday.

If you’re looking for activities, we’d recommend stopping by Monteverde Cloud Forest, where you can zip line through the jungle, while the breathtaking Arenal volcano (which is active, by the way) is just a 3-hour drive away.

They’ve also national parks and animal sanctuaries brimming with jaguars, sloths and sea turtles, as well as over 300 beaches on both the Pacific and Caribbean oceans, so you won’t be short of activities on this trip.

6. Maldives

With some of the calmest and clearest ocean in the world for diving, it’s no wonder the Maldives is the most popular honeymoon destination with Irish couples.

There are 1,200 islands to choose from in this Indian Ocean paradise, so you’re spoiled for choice.

7. Antarctica

It’ll take you 24 hours of flying to get to Ushuaia, the most southerly city in the world, but that’s a small price to pay for the experience of a lifetime.

You’ll brave some of the harshest conditions on the planet (Antarctica is about 99% covered in ice) in order to get a look at the incredible wildlife, such as orca, humpback and minke whales and the adorable emperor, adélie and macaroni penguins.

One for true explorers only.

Antarctica

8. Bahamas

If your idea of paradise is peace and quiet while lounging on a beach overlooking azure waters, then the Bahamas are where you need to be – only 30 of its 700 islands are inhabited.

If the only company you crave is that of animals, then you might want to check out Pigs Beach, where several large pigs have been hogging the best spots for many a year.

You can even go for a swim with ’em!

9. Thailand

If you’re looking for beautiful beaches, jungle journeys, and captivating culture in an affordable lap of luxury, a Thailand honeymoon is just the ticket.

Top of your to-do list should be a visit the Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai, where you can witness 36 Asian elephants happily roaming the jungle.

While you’re here you can’t not visit the magnificent island of Koh Phi Phi, where Leonardo DiCaprio’s The Beach was filmed.

Thai Beach

10. Galapagos

Follow in the footsteps of the father of evolutionary thought, Charles Darwin, and explore this stunning region with its exceptionally rare breeds of wildlife.

The archipelago of volcanic islands is located off the coast of Ecuador and is best explored by cruise. How luxurious does that sound?

Take to its waters by kayak or go snorkelling in order to get up close and personal with white tipped sharks, giant manta rays and sea lions.

If you’re looking for someplace to collect stories for the grandkids, there aren’t many settings better than this.
