Mayo-born author Sally Rooney, best known for Normal People, has made it onto the TIME’s 100 Most Influential People in 2022. She appears in the Titan section of the list, alongside Oprah Winfrey, Kris Jenner, Tim Cook, and Michelle Yeoh.

Actor and writer Lena Dunham wrote about Rooney’s position on the list, stating:

Several times in a generation, there is a writer who speaks such basic truths—in such skillful prose—that they become a signpost for all our needs and concerns, all our unanswered questions and anxious dreams.

“When she published Conversations With Friends, Sally Rooney became that person, and her second novel, Normal People, cemented her role as the minimalist examiner of modern romance.”

This news comes as the television adaptation of her first novel Conversations with Friends is airing on Hulu, BBC Three, and RTÉ. The TV adaptation of Normal People, starring Paul Mescal and Daisy Edgar Jones, took Ireland and the world by storm back in 2020. Rooney published her third novel Beautiful World, Where Are You in September 2021, which we reviewed HERE.

TIME’s 100 most influential people list is divided into six categories; Pioneers, Artists, Innovators, Titans, Icons, and Leaders. The list includes a range of people, from President Volodymer Zelensky to actor and activist Mila Kunis. You can check them all out HERE.

Whether you love her or hate her (I’m firmly a Sally Rooney stan) it’s pretty cool to see her on this list. I for one am very much looking forward to seeing what she does next.
